Love the comment from Beccatronic on our last blog about best ads for girls. She wrote, "Princess Peach's powers come from her emotions - anger turns her to fire, sadness makes her shoot tears, joy makes her fly etc. Isn't that reinforcing the stereotypes that girls are more emotional than logical, and that our uncontrollable feelings make us unreliable - one of the classic arguments against promoting women in the workplace?" She is so right. Why do these new girl characters (Princess Peach, Sesame Street's new girl character, Abby Caddaby) get flying power from being happy? Is this about discomfort with REAL girl power -- what happens when girls aren't smiling all the time and making people (boys, men) comfortable, when they have the audacity to say what they think and question gender roles -- they're called bitches, mean girls, etc. for upsetting the nice and kind apple cart. We'll be back on this topic when we talk about the "sheroes" in "Heroes", a new TV series.
